- Provide time to control medical conditions (like diabetes, BP, thyroid) before conception.
Contraceptive Options Available
We provide a full range of modern contraception — from “set and forget” long-term methods to short-term and hormone-free options. Together, we choose what’s best and safest for you.
Highly Effective Long-Term Methods (LARC)
1. Copper IUD (Intrauterine Device)
- Effectiveness: About 99.2%.
- How it works: A small T-shaped device placed inside the uterus. Copper prevents sperm from fertilising the egg. Lasts 10–12 years.
- Benefits: Most effective reversible method, no hormones, one-time procedure, immediate return of fertility after removal, can also be used as emergency contraception.
- Best for: Women wanting long-term, hormone-free contraception.
2. Hormonal IUD (e.g. Mirena-type)
- Effectiveness: Around 99.8%.
- How it works: T-shaped device releasing a low dose of progestin in the uterus. Lasts 3–7 years depending on the type.
- Benefits: Very light or even no periods for many women, less cramps, very high effectiveness with minimal hormones.
- Best for: Women wanting long-term contraception along with lighter periods.
3. Contraceptive Implant
- Effectiveness: About 99.9%.
- How it works: A small rod inserted under the skin of the upper arm releasing progestin. Lasts up to 3 years.
- Benefits: “Set and forget” method, extremely effective, reversible, may lighten or stop periods.
- Best for: Women who want the highest protection without daily effort.
Hormonal Methods
1. Birth Control Pills
- Effectiveness: Around 93% (typical use), 99% (perfect use).
- Types: Combined pills (estrogen + progestin) and progestin-only mini pills.
- Benefits: Periods become regular and lighter, reduced cramps and PMS, less acne with some pills, and reduced risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer.
- Considerations: Must be taken daily. Combined pills are not suitable for smokers over 35 or some medical conditions.
- Best for: Women comfortable with remembering a daily pill.
2. Contraceptive Injection (Depo-Provera type)
- Effectiveness: About 96%.
- How it works: Progestin injection given every 3 months.
- Benefits: Very effective, only 4 injections per year, can stop periods in many women, very private method.
- Considerations: Must return every 3 months, fertility may take 6–18 months to return after stopping, possible weight gain.
- Best for: Women who want a strong method but don’t want an IUD or daily pills.
Barrier Methods
1. Condoms (Male & Female)
- Benefits: Readily available, protect against STIs and HIV, no hormones, can be used with most other methods.
- Best for: New relationships, STI protection, couples wanting hormone-free options.
2. Diaphragm
- Soft silicone cup placed over the cervix and used with spermicide.
- Reusable and hormone-free but needs fitting by a doctor and correct use each time.
Permanent Methods
1. Female Sterilisation (Tubal Ligation)
- Effectiveness: About 99.5%.
- How it works: Fallopian tubes are blocked or sealed surgically.
- Benefits: Permanent, no daily action, no hormones.
- Best for: Women who are certain they do not want more pregnancies.
2. Male Sterilisation (Vasectomy)
- Effectiveness: About 99.85%.
- How it works: Vas deferens (sperm-carrying tubes) are cut or sealed.
- Benefits: Simpler than female sterilisation, done under local anaesthesia, faster recovery.
- Important: Not immediately effective — needs follow-up tests after 3 months.
- Best for: Couples sure they don’t want (more) children and where the male partner is willing.
Emergency Contraception
1. Emergency Pills (“Morning-After” Pills)
- Levonorgestrel pills: To be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, about 85% effective.
- Ulipristal acetate: Can be taken up to 120 hours (5 days), more effective than standard levonorgestrel pills.
2. Copper IUD
- Most effective emergency contraception (around 99%).
- Can be inserted up to 5 days after unprotected intercourse and then works as long-term contraception.
Natural Methods (Fertility Awareness)
- Tracking fertile days using cycle calendar, basal body temperature and cervical mucus.
- Requires daily tracking and strong discipline.
- Suitable for couples who prefer non-hormonal methods for personal or religious reasons.
Choosing the Right Method for You
There is no “one-size-fits-all” in contraception. During counselling, we look at:
- Effectiveness needs: Whether you absolutely want to avoid pregnancy or can accept a small chance.
- Hormonal vs non-hormonal: Preference for or against hormones based on health and comfort.
- Convenience: Whether you prefer “set and forget” (IUD/implant), quarterly injections or a daily pill.
- Health conditions: Migraine, BP, clot history, heavy periods, breastfeeding, etc.
- STI protection: Need for condoms, especially with new partners.
- Budget: Upfront vs long-term cost and availability of government programmes.

Common Concerns About Contraception
- “Will birth control make me gain weight?”
Most methods do not cause significant weight gain. Some women may gain weight with injections, and we discuss this openly before starting. - “Can I get pregnant after stopping?”
Yes. Fertility returns quickly for most reversible methods (IUD, pills, implant). Only injections may take 6–18 months for full fertility to return. - “Will it affect my future fertility?”
No. Reversible methods do not damage long-term fertility. - “Will hormones change my mood?”
Some women may notice mood changes, others don’t. We can adjust or change methods if needed. - “Is IUD insertion very painful?”
There may be strong cramping for a few minutes during insertion. Most women find those few minutes worth it for many years of protection. - “Can I skip periods using birth control?”
Yes, with certain hormonal methods it is medically safe to reduce or skip periods in many women.
Cost of Family Planning Services
The cost of contraception depends on the method chosen — for example, pills have a monthly cost, while IUDs and implants have a higher one-time cost but last for several years.
