Understanding Your Gynae Check-up: What Every Woman Should Know
Regular gynecological check-ups are one of the most important things you can do
for your health as a woman. Yet many women feel nervous about these appointments or skip
them altogether. As a gynecologist with over 30 years of experience, I want to demystify the
gynae check-up and help you understand why it’s so valuable for your health.
Why Regular Gynae Check-ups Matter:
Many women only visit a gynecologist when they have a problem, but preventive care is just as
important. Regular check-ups help us:
● Detect problems early when they’re most treatable
● Screen for cervical cancer and other conditions
● Discuss reproductive health and family planning
● Manage chronic conditions like PCOD or endometriosis
● Address concerns about menstruation, menopause, or sexual health
● Update vaccinations like HPV vaccine
● Build a relationship with your doctor
When Should You Start Getting Gynae Check-ups?
I recommend that all women begin regular gynecological care by age 18, or earlier if they
become sexually active or have menstrual concerns. Annual check-ups should continue
throughout your reproductive years and beyond menopause.
What Happens During a Gynae Check-up?
Let me walk you through a typical appointment so you know exactly what to expect:
- Medical History Discussion (10-15 minutes) We’ll start by talking about your health history,
including:
● Your menstrual cycle (when did your last period start, how regular is it)
● Any symptoms or concerns you’re experiencing
● Sexual health and contraception needs
● Previous pregnancies or gynecological procedures
● Family history of gynecological conditions
● Current medications or supplements
This is your time to ask questions and discuss anything that’s been concerning you. No question
is too small or embarrassing – I’ve heard it all! - Physical Examination (5-10 minutes) The physical exam includes:
● Blood pressure and weight check
● Breast examination to check for lumps or abnormalities
● Abdominal examination
● External genital examination
● Internal pelvic examination (if needed) - Pap Smear (If Due) For women over 21, we recommend Pap smears every 3 years to screen
for cervical cancer. This quick test takes just a few minutes and can save your life by detecting
abnormal cells early. - Additional Tests (If Needed) Depending on your age, symptoms, and risk factors, we might
recommend:
● STI testing
● Ultrasound
● Blood tests for hormones or other markers
● HPV testing - Discussion and Plan (5-10 minutes) We’ll discuss findings, answer your questions, and
create a plan for your health going forward.
How to Prepare for Your Gynae Check-up:
● Schedule your appointment when you’re not menstruating (if possible)
● Write down questions or symptoms beforehand
● Know the date of your last menstrual period
● List any medications you’re taking
● Be honest about your sexual history and lifestyle
● Don’t douche or use vaginal products before your appointment
● Wear comfortable clothing
Common Concerns Women Have:
“Will the examination hurt?” Most women experience minimal discomfort. I use gentle
techniques and explain each step. If you feel pain, tell me immediately.
“I’m embarrassed about my body.” Please don’t be! I’m a medical professional who sees
patients every day. Your body is normal, and there’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Our clinic has all-women staff to make you more comfortable.
“What if I’m on my period?” Unless you’re scheduled for a Pap smear, we can still do most of
the examination during your period. Call us if you’re unsure.
“I’m nervous about the results.” Most check-ups reveal no problems. If we do find something,
catching it early means better treatment outcomes. I’ll explain everything clearly and support
you through any necessary treatment.
Special Situations:
First Visit: If this is your first gynecological visit, let us know. I’ll take extra time to explain
everything and ensure you’re comfortable.
If You’ve Experienced Trauma: If you have a history of sexual trauma, please inform us. We
can modify the examination or proceed at your pace with extra sensitivity.
If You’re Pregnant: Different considerations apply during pregnancy. We offer comprehensive
antenatal care.
